Creation of Saw Poe Thaw Thaw's Legacy Foundation

Saw Poe Thaw Thaw’s Legacy Foundation: A Commitment to the Karen People (Translated by Saw Chit Nge Lay, SPTT Legacy Foundation’s Scholar)

Creation Date: March 26, 2024, Revised Date: 03/22/2025, Online Post Date: May 01, 2026

The Saw Poe Thaw Thaw’s Legacy Foundation was established in response to the ongoing struggles faced by the Karen people, particularly those affected by civil war and displacement. The conflict in our homeland has forced many to flee their homes, seeking safety in refugee camps where they continue to endure severe hardship. Access to education, healthcare, and stable livelihoods remains a critical challenge. Recognizing these urgent needs, this foundation was created to provide structured and meaningful assistance to alleviate the suffering of our people.

The need for such a foundation became increasingly clear through firsthand experiences of helping Karen individuals since 2017. Initially, these efforts were informal and undocumented. However, over time, it became evident that a more organized and sustainable approach was necessary to ensure long-term impact. With careful reflection and evaluation, what began as an individual effort evolved into a structured initiative aimed at reducing the burdens of displacement, poverty, and insecurity among Karen communities. This realization led to the formal establishment of Saw Poe Thaw Thaw’s Legacy Foundation, ensuring that support for our people is not only consistent but also transparent and accountable.

One of the most pressing issues facing Karen refugees is their uncertain status in countries such as Thailand. Many struggles with legal restrictions that prevent them from obtaining work permits, leaving them vulnerable to exploitation and financial instability. Furthermore, educational opportunities remain limited, making it difficult for Karen youth to build a secure future. These challenges are compounded by the fact that our homeland, Kawthoolei, is not internationally recognized as an independent nation. As a result, Karen people continue to face systematic marginalization and hardship, making it all the more necessary to establish a foundation dedicated to their well-being and empowerment.

The foundation operates on three core principles.

1.     Financial transparency and accountability are paramount. A well-documented record-keeping system ensures that every form of financial assistance is carefully tracked, allowing both donors and recipients to understand exactly how funds are allocated. Those responsible for managing financial resources are committed to upholding integrity, ensuring that all contributions serve their intended purpose.

2.      The foundation prioritizes effective and fair distribution of aid. A structured management system is in place to ensure that support reaches those who need it most. This includes not only financial assistance but also access to essential resources such as education and healthcare. By maintaining efficiency in operations, the foundation ensures that both donors and recipients can trust in the meaningful impact of their contributions.

3.     Finally, Saw Poe Thaw Thaw’s Legacy Foundation is not the effort of one individual alone but rather a collective mission supported by friends, family, teachers, and partners. The foundation thrives on collaboration, with a shared commitment to serving the Karen people in the most effective way possible. To maintain accountability and demonstrate the foundation’s ongoing impact, an annual report will be published, providing a comprehensive overview of its activities and achievements.

In essence, this foundation is more than just a charitable initiative; it is a testament to the resilience and unity of the Karen people. By ensuring transparency, fairness, and collective participation, Saw Poe Thaw Thaw’s Legacy Foundation seeks to make a lasting difference in the lives of those who continue to endure hardship. Through this initiative, we strive to not only provide immediate relief but also to create a sustainable foundation for the future of the Karen community.
